“Who am I becoming.”
An outsider can be defined as someone who is not welcomed.
There are many feelings that may arise as a result of becoming an outsider such as being lonely; an outsider may feel excluded at school. Lastly, there are a variety of reasons that may cause to be an outsider such as, not having the same interest classism, stereotypes, racism and sexism.
After being introduced to the concept of an outsider. I am left with many questions, “who makes these rules, who benefits from these rules, how do you change, why are there rivalries with two groups of people, are we born with power to compete, are there people who choose to be an outsider, are there people who choose to be border liners, am I an outsider, or am I an insider.
There are different kinds of outsiders, such as those who choose to be an outsider and those who don’t. There are also individuals who choose to be insiders and also those who choose to be border liners. I feel like I am a border liner. Sometimes I am included and sometimes I’m excluded. This is what I feel a border liner is. I choose to be an outsider because people like to have sometime alone once in a while.
Stereotypes can cause someone to feel like an outsider. A stereotype is when someone is judged by what they know about those people. An example of someone who has been stereotyped is my grandpa. He was working at a carwash and was judged by his race and how he looked. Even though he was an American citizen. They thought he was Mexican. That was the way that he was stereotyped.
Another example about stereotypes is “The Outsiders”. Two characters from the book discuss stereotypes. Pony boy, a greaser thinks that “not all greasers are how the Socials think” and Cherry a soc thinks that “things are rough all over” which means that all people go through problems. Pony boy thinks that they are like that.
Stereotypes are also explored in C. Adichies Ted Talk called “A Danger of a Single Story”. In this presentation she discusses how she believed the stereotype that white people are more important than African Americans. She wrote all her books with white characters. That was dangerous because everyone believed that stereotype. She delt with a lot of stereotypes through her life; But, she also stereotyped other people. For example she believed the stereotype that all Mexicans who lived in poverty were immigrants. She was stereotyped because her college roommate thought that all African Americans lived in poverty and disaster.
Despite stereotypes, epiphanies challenged individuals to become better people. An epiphany is a character change or realization. An example of someone who has had an epiphany is Siddhartha G. (also known as Buddha) had an epiphany. Siddhartha used to be a prince before he started realizing the religious side of life. He suffered in life and traveled so far to find the meaning of it. He would only focus on himself and not the real world. That was when he decided to join the spiritual world.
In addition, to Siddhartha Guatama there is also an example in a book called “The Outsiders”. Johnny Cade is a character that goes from zero to hero. He helped the children in the church. He changed in the book and we found out he had a “soft side”. He used to smoke and he always had a bad attitude.
“Becoming human” is related to dealing with being and outsider, stereotypes, and epiphanies in life because everyone in life deals with things like that. This is related to outsiders because epiphanies are all about how they realize and how they change. It is connected to stereotypes because they get judged. It is connected to epiphanies because they change then start to realize their life. All in all when they are becoming human you deal through epiphanies, stereotypes, or being an outsider.
