Paralleling Media and The Giver

There are many examples of text from our media that parallel the book, The Giver. Some of these examples are articles about Edward Snowden, U.S. incarceration rates, Arizona’s ban on books, and songs such as Muse. All of these texts have strong evidence of how the Giver society parallels our society.
There are many examples in “Uprising” by Muse that parallel the giver. For example in the song it says, “ They’ll try to give us drugs to keep us all dumb down.” This discusses comparing evidence to the giver because everyone takes pills in the Utopian society and don’t know they are taking pills that are keeping them dumb. In the giver they talk about them being controlled. Jonas leaves from the community to go to Elsewhere. Just like in the 4th stanza it discussed about how they will rise up and take power back. There are multiple pieces of evidence that compare our media and the giver.
In regards to the Edward Snowden article and the media they all compare to the giver. They talk about how they both parallel in multiple ways. They parallel because in the giver no one knew about snow and hidden information about the community such as books. It is the same as the N.S.A and the C.I.A. only knowing about the top-secret information. Another example discusses about them both now being able to give information. He wasn’t allowed to give information to anyone but he gave information to Gabriel, the brother of Jonas from the giver. He anyway gave information to him just like Edward Snowden did knowing the government would soon catch him, or in Jonas’s case The Giver. He put information on the web for everyone to see the data. There is also a comparison because Jonas, Gabriel, and Snowden all escape.
Although the article points out incarcerating, it also discusses control. In the giver they parallel because all the family units have a satisfactory amount of people in a family unit for the utopian society. Just like how there is an amount of people in jails. Another example is how it affects people is that they kill the people. In this Dystopia, if there are no people in the jail they will put people in jail. There is incarceration in the utopian society like there is in our society, the dystopian society.
Furthermore, people banned Mexican-American books from Arizona. Books! They were confiscated even from the teachers. This parallels to the giver because it gave them knowledge. The giver was the only one who knew about books. In the article they protest just like Jonas kept asking questions of why they were not allowed to have books in the community. Snowden protested to they government and around the world. These books were banned in Arizona for various reasons.
Clearly, there are many examples of how the giver parallels media. These texts talked about incarcerating, and Edward Snowden. The book the giver there is a lot about control and incarceration. This is how all these text are all “Paralleling the giver.”
